THE QUICK ANSWER

What does Elmo do?

Elmo tracks how a brand is mentioned and cited in answers to selected prompts across supported AI platforms. It is a monitoring tool for creator businesses and agencies, with hosted plans or self-hosting. Coverage and sampling frequency vary by plan, while direct model APIs and consumer search experiences can differ. The result is evidence about sampled answers, not a guarantee of recommendations or traffic.

The useful question in AI visibility is not whether an assistant can be persuaded to say your company’s name. It is whether the answers to real buyer questions describe the product correctly, cite useful sources and include relevant alternatives. Elmo is designed to observe that changing picture. It becomes more informative when the prompt set reflects a business decision instead of a dashboard target.

The official product describes prompts, competitors, share of voice and sources cited by answer engines. Keep those measurements tied to the exact set of prompts and surfaces. An apparently large share of voice in ten branded questions can coexist with no visibility in the generic questions prospective customers really ask.

Start with the questions a buyer would actually ask

Separate branded questions from non-branded use cases. A branded prompt might check whether an answer describes your product correctly. A use-case prompt asks for help with the reader's problem without naming your company. Include a few relevant alternatives and avoid repeatedly rewriting questions just to make your own brand appear.

For a course creator, questions about pricing, target students and the teaching format are different intents. For a software founder, installation, supported outputs and alternatives may matter more. Record language, market, wording and research date so that a later change has some context. These are proposed monitoring practices, not performance results we obtained from an Elmo account.

Keep brand mentions and linked citations as two separate observations. An answer can name a company without linking its site, or cite a useful article without recommending the company behind it. Read enough of the response to understand the role the source plays. A high-level visibility percentage is less useful if it mixes those outcomes or combines easy branded questions with difficult discovery questions.

Compare coverage before comparing plan prices

The public Starter summary listed $29 per month, one brand, fifty prompts, ChatGPT only and once-daily checks. Basic was $99 with any four AI platforms and more frequent sampling, with higher tiers expanding brands, prompts and premium usage. A homepage claim about broad model availability should not be read as every model being included on the cheapest plan.

Compare the exact platforms, how responses are obtained and how often checks run. Unlimited team seats do not mean unlimited prompts or unrestricted provider usage. If you are buying for multiple clients, the brand and prompt allocations may matter more than the seat count.

Sampling frequency also changes the amount of data behind the report. Fifty prompts on one platform once a day represent fifty scheduled prompt-platform checks. The same fifty prompts on four platforms four times a day represent 800. That arithmetic explains the difference in coverage; it is not a count of real customers or independent endorsements. Repeated runs can help expose variability, but they do not make one wording representative of every buyer question.

The self-hosting documentation distinguishes direct AI provider APIs from services that sample real consumer experiences. It recommends relevant scraping providers for surfaces such as ChatGPT and Google AI Mode. Those are not interchangeable measurements. A developer API can use different search behaviour, context and configuration from a person using an interactive product.

When reporting results, name the measured surface instead of simply saying Google or ChatGPT ranked us. Save the actual cited source and answer context. The absence of a citation in one sampled response is an observation, not proof that an entire platform cannot find the site.

Use the observations to improve the underlying information

Elmo's setup guide calls for Docker, Node.js, AI provider configuration and a judging service used to assess brand mentions and sentiment. It can also involve scraping providers. Open-source licensing gives you access to the code, but infrastructure, provider bills, updates and storage remain your responsibility. We did not deploy a separate Elmo instance on the owner's VPS.

For a small creator business, hosted pricing may be easier to understand than assembling several providers. For an agency with an existing technical stack, self-hosting may provide useful control. Compare total expected running costs and coverage before assuming that the free source is the cheaper operational choice.

A useful monitoring result points to a fixable information gap: an outdated plan, unclear compatibility or an important question your site does not answer. Correct your own sources and publish substantiated explanations. Do not manufacture mentions or chase a numerical dashboard score without reading the answers behind it.

We verified public product, plan and setup information, not tracking accuracy or an uplift in AI referrals. Elmo belongs on the shortlist for measuring a defined set of questions over time. It should not be sold as a mechanism that guarantees inclusion, indexing, citations or a top-three result.

What to check before choosing

Coverage, prompts and sampling are plan-specific. Direct model APIs and consumer applications are different surfaces. Self-hosting requires keys and operating costs. Results do not prove traffic, conversions, indexing or future AI recommendations.

Our test method and limits

Public product, pricing and relevant policy/documentation researched on 28 October 2026; editorial narrative revised the same day. Worked budgets and suggested evaluation methods are explanations, not generated-output tests. No account purchase, installation or independent performance benchmark was performed.

Does it fit better than your other option?

Questions before you choose

What should I compare between two AI visibility tools?

Compare the exact answer surfaces, prompt and brand allowances, sampling frequency, geography, citations retained and method used to obtain responses. An inexpensive API-only result and a sampled consumer application answer may measure different things.

Can monitoring force an AI platform to recommend my product?

No. Monitoring can reveal gaps or incorrect information. Accurate product pages, useful independent coverage and real customer relevance remain separate work, and future recommendations cannot be guaranteed.
